I am by no means an expert, so these ramblings and musings reflect my opinions based on a lot of research and experience. I cannot stress enough, always be certain that you have properly identified any mushroom before eating it. Remember when in doubt throw it out.ahistoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07272777202863968238noreply@blogger.comBlogger188125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32979156.post-15542852544122318912016-03-31T22:44:00.002-05:002016-04-07T15:15:10.900-05:002016 off to a good startLooks like the season is staring out pretty good this year.<br />

<br />
I know first and foremost many of you are thinking it's about time I put up a new post. I'll try and get back in the habit of more routine posting though the posts may be shorter.<br />
<br />
For those MO morel hunters, it's a demand not a statement. We are all saying it's about time for the dang mushrooms to show up. Unfortunately, I cannot say that I have seen one in Mid-MO yet but reports are getting more numerous and the trends are in order.<br />
<br />
This photo is from near Branson back on April 3. I usually find my first in our area about a week later, or TOMORROW. Let's hope it is so.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And the yellows are in Oklahoma and marching North. Hopefully soon, I will be picking yellows like these found over the weekend by Mitch, a crazy morel marauder, who travels more miles and picks more mushrooms than most folks I know. What a mouthwatering photo. Makes me itch for the woods. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu9dOVEtFK97ewNwJBiY0EahdzUoAA4YqhXeWrQMRn6714GdsGZqoSUBAgmVv_IxOeREi6xKFGxxKvVSceKESgAt00s0F1rWQ3LNiJPuNXp-uuhy30DQZ0CNScmdugcp27bCpIKg/s1600/download_20140408_105351.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu9dOVEtFK97ewNwJBiY0EahdzUoAA4YqhXeWrQMRn6714GdsGZqoSUBAgmVv_IxOeREi6xKFGxxKvVSceKESgAt00s0F1rWQ3LNiJPuNXp-uuhy30DQZ0CNScmdugcp27bCpIKg/s1600/download_20140408_105351.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And for those sick of winter and already thinking of other mushrooms, my Mom's cousin, Ben, who lives near Monroe, Louisiana found this gorgeous chicken growing under an oak along the path to his vegetable garden. What an awesome treat from mother nature. With all the rain around here, I wouldn't be surprised if someone found one or two chickens while morel hunting this season.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know I normally hunt in Mid-MO this time of the year, but the slow cool spring have kept the hills pretty quiet and I have found myself called to greener pastures for better bounty. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The morels are lining up two by two to be picked on the plains of KS. It has been so dry there that many places haven't popped in several years. The plentiful rain and cooler spring have set up for some amazing picking if you get in the right areas.</div>

The yellows were plentiful down south. You just had to find the right trees. Not a lot of folks hunt morels down there so they get to grow.<br />

I found these on Tuesday and only ended up picking the big one. It was about 4 pounds. Hopefully the rest will be a good size by the weekend.<br />
<br />
Now that the woods are alive, I am hoping that the blog will come back to life too. So keep an eye out for more entries to come before the mushrooms return underground for winter.ahistoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07272777202863968238noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32979156.post-75240830341027357702012-05-08T12:57:00.000-05:002012-05-08T12:57:01.064-05:00Time for Trumpets<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I am sure the early start caught quite a few people off guard, but I hope everyone was able to make it out and at least find a few.<br /><br />As we move on to other mushrooms the early season continues. I was down at the Lake last Friday and had some extra time so I took a quick walk around a local state park down there. Mush to my surprise and delight, I found a nice mess of black trumpets. they were only showing up on the southern and eastern facing slopes, but as you can see there were quite a few in some places. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I only picked the larger ones. There were lots of little ones I left behind but I still came out with about a pounds worth. Not bad considering I have never seen trumpets this early in May before. They usually don't show up until the last week of May or early June.<br /><br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And trumpets weren't all that I found. I picked a couple of mature cibarius minor or small chanterelles. I also saw quite a few common yellow chanterelle buttons just starting out. With all the rain we got early this week, by next weekend at least the southern parts of Mid-MO should be ripe for the pickings. Be sure you don't miss out. And use bug spray when you go. The ticks are looking to be bad this summer.</div>

A lot of you might think I am crazy going out in the middle of March looking for morels. But that was actually the last of my intentions today. There are many good reasons to get out right now and stretch your legs and look around the woods. As long as your goal isn't to find morels, you will not be disappointed. And if you do happen upon a small patch of early morels, well that is just a bonus.</span> </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span><br /></span></div><div><span><span>For example, today I had several goals I wanted to accomplish by my scouting. </span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><ol><li><span><span>I wanted to get out of the office and stretch my legs. With temps above 80 and finishing up some pressing deadlines, it is hard to stay in front of a computer while the trees leaf out and the early dogwoods begin to bloom. Scouting an area is not only a good way to get to know the terrain and but also a good way to train your legs. It is just great rejuvenating exercise. Now when my legs start screaming from the lactic acid build up in my leg muscles from being out of shape, that is another matter. </span></span> <span style="font-family: arial; ">At least mine need a little breaking in.<br /><br /></span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; ">To find morels you have to get "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_(psychology)">in the flow</a>." It starts with the flow of walking the woods. Walking up and down the hills, sidestepping thorns, while ducking under branches is an art. You have to develop a different way of moving to pass through and around the brush and </span><span style="font-family: arial; ">briers</span><span style="font-family: arial; "> while constantly looking at the ground, instead of at the branch about to poke you in the ear. You can't tell people how to do this, it can only be learned by doing. By the middle of the season you don't even realize you are doing it.<br /><br />By that time you have moved into the flow of the mushrooms. This is usually achieved after seeing the first one. Once you see that pattern and smell that rich earthly aroma, sticks and thorns be damned.<br /><br /></span></li><li><span><span>It is a great time to try out some tree ID. Peruse the message boards find out what people say they have found them around in past year's (winter threads are a good place where people spill the beans not caught up in Morel Anxiety Syndrome). Order this <a href="http://www.mdcnatureshop.com/product.php?productid=295&cat=&page=1">MO Tree ID in Winter Guide</a> from the conservation department. It gives good descriptions of the bark and branching structure and it is only three bucks. Take it with you until you can ID the potential subjects. Scout these trees out and note them for later hunts.<br /><br /></span></span></li><li><span><span>Also, for me today I have a small tear in the cartilage of my right hip. It mainly hurts only when I sit but I haven't been hiking much since it was diagnosed. I tested it as well today and to my surprise it held up very well. it only hurt when I sat down to drive in between spots. Now I am confident that as I walk more and more it wont bother my hip.<br /><br /></span></span></li><li><span><span>Last now is the time to note changes, damaged down trees. Places change over the course of time. Good groves of trees change and once you learn when they produce you can tell which section of woods looked more poised to produced based on your experience. SO knowing how things look after winter can help you plan you picking path when they are really hitting. This way you hit the best spots first and then can go back and check in between.</span></span></li></ol></div><div><span><span>OH and as for that bonus....</span></span></div><div><span><span> </span></span></div><div><span>Sometimes</span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>Mother</span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>Natures</span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>Rewards</span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>You with</span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>A special </span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>Treat</span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><br /></span></span></div><div><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7064/6842488292_b80b84c50a_b.jpg" border="0" alt="" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); text-decoration: underline; display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 500px; height: 281px; " /><span>The icing on the cake, my first morel of the 2012. Scarlet cups that over-wintered due to the mild weather are getting as big as 2 inches. Also rattlesnake </span>ferns<span style="font-size: 100%;"> are popping up in the warmer places. </span></span><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">But this week was the kicker. And these are yellows they are finding, not the earlier black morels. This is earlier than I have ever seen the deep south come to life in all my years of hunting. Southern Texas has come on about this time, but not these states. By the way, Texas has yet to happen, probably due to the record dry spell they are still </span>going<span style="font-size: 100%;"> through.</span></span></span></div><div><br /></div><div>They are on the march and it will be March when they show up here, unless some crazy cold spell comes in and returns all to normal. We need a good soaking to bring the woods back to life before old man winter ushers in the end of the season. The mushrooms are just waiting to spring forth. </div><div><br /></div><div>We found quite a few hens over the weekend despite the fact that we haven't received a drop of rain since mid-September. They were often small or sprouting up in unusual places such as inside stumps, or were already showing signs of drying out.</div><div><br /></div><div>Here's an example showing the unusual nature of their appearance. It also shows you that as long as you have a flashlight, hens are one mushroom you can hunt in the dark. In fact, hens show up pretty good by flashlight because the white parts are very reflective.</div><div><br /></div><span><span></span></span><div>I took a 90 minute midnight hike and found two of these, but before you go out in the dark. Please keep in mind the park rules. Most are closed from sunset to sunrise. However, you can hike the trails at night if you are allowed to and actually camp in the park like we did last weekend. </div><br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxcArtTvk0v0S0fNgbSgM37x-enTY4Nf6boJsDbn5cEiRaOuEO6gyAPgXwF1bBj4lofntN1FybALSY' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>ahistoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07272777202863968238noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32979156.post-62059728459170622322011-09-25T23:38:00.004-05:002011-09-25T23:47:17.273-05:00More Maitake on the Way<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRtuw2s1rv0v3atT92k86GM_qe9lIx69RYY9wGLl5s8St0CZ6DwH4Pm9GCgOnsJmHkrflSELnhFtSquC91WeVQBQRegPxStZCBnUrNWsu8JbZz_nq6Fz1b9aJZ8nJ-pxESDSjxcg/s1600/younghen3.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRtuw2s1rv0v3atT92k86GM_qe9lIx69RYY9wGLl5s8St0CZ6DwH4Pm9GCgOnsJmHkrflSELnhFtSquC91WeVQBQRegPxStZCBnUrNWsu8JbZz_nq6Fz1b9aJZ8nJ-pxESDSjxcg/s320/younghen3.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656524943810526050" /></a><div style="text-align: left; ">I went back out and met back up with Calvin and then we ran into Mr. Rogers out hiking about before we came upon this tree. It is always great to meet other hunters and share stories, especially when times are dry. Sometimes, mother nature rewards your persistence and patience and today was no exception.<div><br /></div><div>We first found some puff balls, small gem studded ones. Then we came across a nice chicken log that someone else had gotten to first and made off with some good poundage. They left behind a few nice shelves though, so a pound of chicken went into the bag.</div><div><br /></div><div>We walked a bit more and out of no where I stumbled across the beauty pictured above. A HEN in September. What luck. About 4 pounds worth all super fresh and all usable and destined for the hearty hen soup I will be serving at the upcoming foray in a few weekends. Back to the woods, but here is one video before I go.</div><div><br /></div><div>I am not positive but this may be the first hen in MO.</div><div><br /></div><div><div><br /></div></div><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzkbE-LuVv8tacsLn88yzvepjoW6DBqxwN3agYwF6utcIpkQ45KuB1O7KNZW4BM_oo53qV-1rUhec4' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>ahistoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07272777202863968238noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32979156.post-28659892073131146322011-09-22T18:08:00.004-05:002011-09-22T19:21:14.550-05:00The First Fall BirdI went out to scout to see if the recent rain had gotten anything going out at Rock Bridge. I was hoping I wouldn't find much which would mean more likelihood of finding mushrooms during the upcoming foray. I checked some chant, trumpet, and hedgehog patches. I even checked a couple of hen trees to see if there are any signs of things to come. Nothing yet.<div><br /></div><div>After only ten minutes on the way to one known hen tree, I came across this and took a few videos. Keep in mind that my main purpose of taking these videos is to entice one complaining Morelin, who has been holed up in a very dry part of Kansas without a mushroom to be found for well over a month. It looks like that is starting to change and with the recent rain and cooler weather with nice dewey mornings, there is a good chance that the mushrooms will make one final appearance before winter sets in.<div><br /></div><div>And with fall comes a lot of fungal fun including some of the best edibles, like the hen of the woods (grifola frondosa) and chicken of the woods (Laetiporus sulphereus). So in hopes of finding a few edibles along with learning more about identifying other mushrooms, the newly formed Mid-MO chapter of the Missouri Mycological Society is holding their first foray out at Rock Bridge State Park. </div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVMe3i5c98RmwKzFiZQuMlPGqNa_97xSWsvhoioEs4KJRxRaYB2S7WmSM-hgvWBDO6zeP-aC024nZLlO7EJWZJeB43ZORTyxdsnkWT4N2fq9cLs2VwJxDxkjBZYEA0miNMhm0jGQ/s400/DSC_0026.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVMe3i5c98RmwKzFiZQuMlPGqNa_97xSWsvhoioEs4KJRxRaYB2S7WmSM-hgvWBDO6zeP-aC024nZLlO7EJWZJeB43ZORTyxdsnkWT4N2fq9cLs2VwJxDxkjBZYEA0miNMhm0jGQ/s400/DSC_0026.JPG" border="0" alt="" style="float: right; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></a><br /></div><div>If you need a little inspiration to attend then visit this post from a few years ago <a href="http://missourimorels.blogspot.com/2008/10/fifty-pounds-in-one-day-ok-so-you-have.html">about picking 50 pounds in one day</a>. It grows in quite abundance around certain parts of Missouri and Mid-MO has its own hot spots. They are just starting to flush and the lack of rain has them coming on slowly yet in good numbers.</div><div><div><br /></div><div>Although common chanterelles could easily be mistaken for the poisonous jack-o-lantern, the smooth underside provides certainty of the bountiful gourmet goodness that they bring, The smell is also a dead give away. If you get a lot of them together in a bag you'll notice this waxy light fruity smell instead of the usual pungent fungus smell of other mushrooms. Many guides describe the smell like apricots. And they taste the same way. Not like apricots, mind you, but unusual and unlike any other mushroom. They rival morels in taste in my own humble opinion, but then again I may not be that objective tonight, as I slathered a mess of sauteed chants over my KC strip for dinner. </div><div><br /></div><div>Let me show you how easy these smooth fellows can make you into a gourmet. I was hungry and I found a great sale on steaks, but I wasn't thinking it through and so I didn't get anything to go with it. Now I have chanterelles, so I knew they were going in there - three different varieties in fact (common yellow and orange ones and of course smooths). I looked around and found an onion from the farmer's market and a little bit of cream left over from a batch of home-made ice cream for the 4th. I needed garlic but was out. I was about to turn to the powdered stuff when I remembered some garlic that had gone wild behind the house, so I went out and pulled some up. It was small but would do the trick.</div><div><br /></div><div>And now for the recipe. Did I say that I do not believe in recipes and rarely follow one. That being said, be ready for long meandering explanations that you will have to translate onto your own recipe card if you want to preserve it. Also I am not a foodie and this is NOT a food blog. I just want to set the record straight.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Wednesday Night's Chanterelle Cream Sauce</b></div><div><br /></div><div>Step one, pull the chanterelles into even pieces. You can cut them if you want, but I like the rougher look and it is just plain easier. Put a saute pan on medium heat and add just the tiniest bit of oil (preferably a light olive oil) to wet the pan. </div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9boaUXv-yarTgujScXNJ39Zer1x-9NOz5XYOtnD6YfcQ4xlUMM-8wkzjXgovWn9eqjV1COl-eLBBT4N_rolbBXKWXMo_8_N0HQdh_DL7DhT9EghYxdXfSyPuSFbufX1mXSs0iZg/s1600/Step+2.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaTjEeCRleDqCe_XqI8gAmIimKMEF0zyc6Vpp5x6b55d0bR5KLXutws3hSoYk3me6vWe-pXmlcdclhF7gQr08pu3560HF1eX0qKpf7z67d7Df_XlZHZixz6ASR-aze7cgy762DdQ/s400/Step+1.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626449788223632866" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 366px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /></span></div><div>Place the chanterelles in the pan and saute on medium stirring occasionally until they have reduced in size by half. </div><div><br /></div><div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9boaUXv-yarTgujScXNJ39Zer1x-9NOz5XYOtnD6YfcQ4xlUMM-8wkzjXgovWn9eqjV1COl-eLBBT4N_rolbBXKWXMo_8_N0HQdh_DL7DhT9EghYxdXfSyPuSFbufX1mXSs0iZg/s1600/Step+2.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9boaUXv-yarTgujScXNJ39Zer1x-9NOz5XYOtnD6YfcQ4xlUMM-8wkzjXgovWn9eqjV1COl-eLBBT4N_rolbBXKWXMo_8_N0HQdh_DL7DhT9EghYxdXfSyPuSFbufX1mXSs0iZg/s400/Step+2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626448730365829794" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 362px; " /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div></div></div><div>Add in some sliced onion, as much or as little as you like.
