It's About Time!

I think those three words sum it up best for most.

I know first and foremost many of you are thinking it's about time I put up a new post. I'll try and get back in the habit of more routine posting though the posts may be shorter.

For those MO morel hunters, it's a demand not a statement. We are all saying it's about time for the dang mushrooms to show up.  Unfortunately, I cannot say that I have seen one in Mid-MO yet but reports are getting more numerous and the trends are in order.

This photo is from near Branson back on April 3. I usually find my first in our area about a week later, or TOMORROW. Let's hope it is so.

And the yellows are in Oklahoma and marching North. Hopefully soon, I will be picking yellows like these found over the weekend by Mitch, a crazy morel marauder, who travels more miles and picks more mushrooms than most folks I know. What a mouthwatering photo. Makes me itch for the woods.

And for those sick of winter and already thinking of other mushrooms, my Mom's cousin, Ben, who lives near Monroe, Louisiana found this gorgeous chicken growing under an oak along the path to his vegetable garden. What an awesome treat from mother nature. With all the rain around here, I wouldn't be surprised if someone found one or two chickens while morel hunting this season.

Thanks for the update! I went out and had a quick look yesterday after work in the bottoms. I've marked some of my best early producing spots on gps, and hit them all, but nothing.

I suspected that I was a bit early, but just couldn't wait any longer. Seems like we may be a bit behind last year, and it definitely seems dryer then the past several years. I thought those big rains we had like a week and a half ago would really moisten things up, but it just struck me as very dry.

I'll be out all day Saturday - I definitely think we are really close…

Please update as much as you can. I check this site a couple of times a day during the morel season. Love to see how others here in midmo are doing.

Exciting! Thanks for the update! I'm planning to hunt Sunday morning and possibly Monday morning. I'll send any pictures if I find anything.

4-15-14: So I found a few small grey/yellows in my parents back yard in St. Louis Co. around an old ash. I figured that the Missouri river bottoms up around Jeff/columbia would be further along so I took a day trip yesterday. Things were pretty bleak out there. I managed to find a few small grey/yellows, none much bigger than my thumb and very hard to see. The night before was freezing, and there is no rain in the 10 day forecast, so not sure about how the season will turn up. In fact a few of the small ones I found were already redding on the top... Any words of encouragement, ahistory? And thanks again for posting. Your insights and comments are always helpful and reassuring.

Checked several places that looked promising yesterday with my super scout (husband) the forest floor looks too empty yet. Hoping for an awesome season like last year....enough to enjoy and then a few jars to dry and put up for later/sharing.

Morrells usually grow around elm trees, always collect in a net bag so the seeds come off of the mushrooms & you'll have them every year,go after a good rain, the more rain the better,im in mid MO. & they haven't got here yet,too dry, hoping for rain or I have to drive to KS to my secret spot, got 9 gallons years ago there!

It's still freezing at night here in the midwest, were going to have a late morrell season,my guess is around the last of april or the first week of May near KC MO.We need RAIN badly or this season here in kc will suck.
